A Story which I like

A story, which I like, about

Flaubert and one of the Rothschilds:

At a sumptuous dinner, the kind

Which epitomizes haut-bourgeois France,

The writer said to his neighbour,

Over the coffee and Armagnac:

‘There is a problem which I cannot solve,

Monsieur le Baron,

But which perhaps you could explain.’

‘Of course,’ said the great banker, ‘If I can.’

‘Well, then, why do Government stocks go up and down?’

‘Ah, Monsieur,’ replied Rothschild,

‘If I knew that, I would be a rich man.’
